INMARSAT, is a global telecommunications company founded in 1979, originally as an intergovernmental organisation. It operates a fleet of eleven(as of 2005) geosynchronous telecommunications satellites. The corporation is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange (ISAT) as of June 2005.

INMARSAT provides telephony and data solutions to users world-wide, via special digital radios known as "terminals". An INMARSAT terminal contacts the satellite and communicates to a soil station through the satellite. It provides reliable communications solutions to a variety of governments, aid agencies, media outlets and businesses needing to communicate in remote regions or in which there is no reputable terrestrial network. Service becomes unavailable as you near the extreme north and south poles.

Solutions include traditional voice calls, low-level data tracking techniques, and high-speed data products and services. The most recent of these provides GPRS-type solutions at up to 144kbit/s via the BGAN IP satellite modem the size of a notebook PC. Other providers offer mobile ISDN services used by the media for reside via videophone reporting on world events.

The telephone country codes for Inmarsat are:

# 871 Atlantic - East

# 872 Pacific

# 873 Indian Ocean

# 874 Atlantic - West

Historically expensive, calls by way of Inmarsat have now dropped to a level where they're comparable and in many cases favourable, to worldwide roaming costs, or hotel phone calls.

Newer products and services using IP technology feature an always-on capability in which the user is simply charged for that amount of information they send and receive instead of the length of time they are online. Call charges are also the same where ever in the world the service is employed. Older providers utilised digital speech coding and required a dedicated channel.

The satellites are digital transponders that obtain digital signals, reform the pulses, and then retransmit them to ground stations. The ground stations perform billing and act as gateways for the public switched telephone network and internet.
