Being a parent now for nearly sixteen years I can really understand the fine balance between toddler discipline, and squashing the spirit of a child.
When my first child Ellie was born I was totally new with this thing termed parenting, and I found a lot of the parenting books to be contradictory at best and some just plain silly at worst. This may seem harsh to many new parents who are seeking a clear path being a parent.
I can understand being a parent is a tricky business particularly when it comes to discipline and especially toddler discipline, if you opt for the free range strategy and just let your kids kind of develop in the vain hope all will be fine, then you'll probably be living some kind of living nightmare, with your kid entirely dictating the agenda and totally running your life.
On the other hand if you opt for total discipline as favored by many over the years, then you be in danger of completely losing the real essences of your kid's persona.
I would like to state that their is a holy grail of toddler discipline, that you can follow and tick off the list as you go, and believe me some individuals would try to sell it to you like this. Just how I see it, it's regarding two core things boundaries and communication especially as your child begins to get to the toddler stage and further than.
I still find this to be with my 16 and 13 old children, I have what i refer to as my fall back position, that's as long as I will carry on any given issue, that's my boundary that in most cases my children over a number of years have learnt to understand, however within those boundaries their is a lot of opportunities of freedom of expression and chances to grow as individuals that I personally feel is necessary.
To do this though good communication is essential when implementing toddler discipline, to this end I have been highly fortunate to have learnt things for example NLP that have helped me shape my speaking skills and gestures to get maximum engagement with my children.
