National Hot Breakfast Month

Most tell the story that this holiday was created by the Jimmy Dean Foods division of the Sara Lee Corporation. As the story goes… the group which produces heat-and-serve breakfast dishes (most notably with Jimmy Dean Brand Sausage) found that over 60% of Americans eat cold cereal or another non-hot breakfast each day. So they started a month-long holiday to promote interest in hot breakfast food options.

Although this tale has not been proven in completeness, it has been celebrated for several years by Breakfast Enthusiasts and used to promote healthy breakfast awareness by groups, governments and organizations, as a celebration of a special event, and to give pomp and circumstance for groups and their special events.

Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday, OR Pancake Tuesday)

The Day Before The Start Of Lent (February or March depending on the date of Easter)

This yearly pancake month began as a religious observation. According to the Bible, Jesus spent 40 days in a desert fasting and resisting any temptation put before Jesus by Satan. To honor Jesus accomplishment, many Christians practice a fasting commonly referred to as,  ‘Lent.’ This observation practices a tradition of ‘mock’-fasting. People who are the most strict about Lent, forego most food items except  only the most plain of food products. Strict Lent Fasting diets exclude sugar, milk & eggs. To use up these forbidden ingredients during this time of Lent, pancakes were made instead of heartier breakfast food choices.

Pancake Tuesday Dates are/were:

  • March 4, 2014
  • February 17, 2015
  • February 9, 2016
  • February 28, 2017

There is also a small movement to establish a National Pancake Day on September 26. But in light of the popularity of Shrove Tuesday, this is mostly ignored by food holiday purists.
